Denial

“All the boys were looking at you back in the pub”, he whispers gently while sneaking an arm around your shoulders. And then there’s a small pause, just enough for you to notice that he is going to say something dramatic, something manipulative, something even he doesn’t really understand.  “I was jealous.”

You’re caught off guard, staring blankly at the floor. Nothing really ever comes to mind in situations like this. You’ve just gotta let it settle in first, and then you can cope with it – if you can cope at all.

“Were you?”, you sound distant as if you were underwater.

“Yeah”, he leans in with a predatory smile, something that turns his infinitely pretty face into something divine and dangerous. He  only ever lets you see him like this. Dismantled, unhinged, crazed. “I love you, you know.”

You feel his hands tighten around you but you’re totally frozen. Can’t move, can’t speak, can’t think. How long has it been? Five years since he last told you that? Seems like an eternity, really. Something that happened to someone else or never really happened at all…

And then he leans even closer, his lips touching your left ear ever so softly. “You’re mine. Always were.”
